Chapter Two

Elie and his townsmen are packed into cattle cars for days and suffer very badly, they are very thirsty and hot. One woman, Mrs. Schacter, continually screams about a fire. She is silenced by some of her fellow prisoners. But as the train arrives at the Birkenau, they see smoke coming from the chimnies and are overwhelmed with an awful smell of burning flesh.

This chapter shows all the horrible conditions that the Jews had to go through ALREADY. They are not even at the camp and yet they deal with awful conditions of being cramped inside of cattle cars with barely any room. Many were unable to stand. I think this shows ome of the horrible things that are yet to come in the book.
